Beach on Jersey

By Meera Dattani

Fancy a holiday closer to home, but with better weather? Jersey’s location a stone’s throw from the French coast is spot-on

It’s a compact island, so getting around is easy and there’s plenty to do, whether you’re after beaches, coastal walks, family attractions or a great food scene. We take a look at 10 fantastic ways to explore this balmy isle.

Gorilla, Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust

1. Plemont Beach
With its sea caves, rock pools and a great café, it’s not surprising that Plemont is regularly touted as Jersey’s most beautiful beach. This sandy north coast gem is a surfer’s paradise in windy climes and perfect for swimming during calmer moments. The towering cliffs offer good shelter from gusty winds and, at low tide, kids love playing in the numerous sandy-bottomed rock pools.

2. Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust
Named after famous author and naturalist Gerald Durrell, Jersey's premier conservation centre is dedicated to helping endangered species recover and survive. It’s an inspiring place where you can see everything from western lowland gorillas and Andean bears to echo parakeets and parma wallabies. Species saved by the trust include Assam pygmy hogs and the St Lucia whiptail lizard.

Cycling in Jersey

3. Coastal cycling
Don your helmet and wheel your way through the unspoilt countryside along dedicated coastal paths which look out onto the island’s beautiful bays and beaches. Jersey’s Green Lanes comprise a 50–mile network of country thoroughfares; the speed limit is 15mph (24km/h) and walkers, cyclists and horse riders have priority. The north coast has an almost unbroken path with superb views.

4. Jersey War Tunnels
Jersey’s occupation by German soldiers in WWII is brought to life at the War Tunnels, once used by the German army. Captive Island is an award–winning exhibition depicting the occupation, while the Garden of Reflection is a peaceful spot for contemplation. Don’t miss the War Trail, former site for an anti-aircraft gun battery and now a natural wildlife habitat.
