The English Blue Flag awards 2009 have now been announced – we take a look at some of the winners

The Blue Flag awards are internationally recognised and mark a beach out as having exceptional water quality, beach cleanliness and safe bathing.

This year, 71 beaches around the country were awarded Blue Flags – 11 less than in 2008 but still a huge increase from a measly 45 in 2002. And with the credit crunch biting, English seaside resorts are seeing a resurgence in popularity.

"Holidaying in this country is the perfect way of saving money and having a great time," said Phil Barton, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, which runs Blue Flag in England.
