Top 10 tips for finding cheap flights

Zoom Plane

The days of flying being quite literally cheap as chips are gone, but follow these top tips and you could still find great deals

1 When you see a cheap fare, book it! They don’t stay cheap for long and it’s a horrible feeling when you miss the boat (er, plane)

2 Be prepared to be flexible with your flight dates and times. Flying midweek rather than at weekends can make a big difference to your fare

The more days you go for, the cheaper it is – go away for longer trips rather than weekend breaks if you can

4 Be prepared to book very early or wait till the last minute

5 Think hard about your departure airport. Check travel costs or airport parking at your local airports and keep these costs in mind when you book. Check the destination airport as well – budget carriers habitually land at airports often miles from the destination city

6 Consider booking two one-way fares. Sometimes, particularly for short breaks, it’s cheaper to buy two single flights – you could even fly into and out of different UK airports

7 On low-cost airline websites, make sure you opt out of the optional extras that you don’t really need. Read through the final booking page carefully before you book

8 Book using a debit card, as they tend to have a lower transaction charge on airline websites than credit cards

9 Fly to a cheaper destinations. Non-European countries that are still short-haul destinations are often much cheaper once you’re there – why not try Morocco or Tunisia rather than Spain this year?

10 Use an online flights aggregator that compares thousands of fares, and make sure you get the best from the software. When using the Orange flights search tool, select the Chart View option to see a handy graph that shows how the fares change over time
