Hotel prices are plummeting in the US, according to a recent survey – so bag yourself a bargain

A report by accommodation experts Hotels.com shows that room rates in New York have dropped by nearly 30% in the past year, from an average price of £175 a night to a much more affordable £120.

Meanwhile Sin City (aka Las Vegas) offers even better value, with average room prices at £51 per night, down from £72 in 2008.

The price drops are largely due to the recession biting in the States, and US hoteliers expect the poor trading conditions to continue into 2010 – meaning now is a great time for British travellers to cross the Pond. So, take a look at 10 great US cities to discover this winter while the prices are low – and find a cheap deal on hotels and flights.

New York, NY
America’s “city that never sleeps” is surprisingly friendly, if not exactly laidback. Winter, though often bitingly cold, is a magical time in New York. Go skating on the open-air Rockefeller Center ice rink, take a ride through Central Park in a horse-drawn carriage then warm up with a brew in one of the city’s many coffee shops.

Las Vegas, Nevada
If you watch CSI you might think Sin City is the most dangerous place in the world. Luckily this isn’t true. America’s glitziest city offers larger-than-life entertainment, whether you’re into mega-casinos, bizarre weddings or taking a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon. It’s also a good winter destination, with daytime temperatures generally staying above 10°C.

San Francisco, California
Equally famous for its hippy history and the rolling streets that have been a backdrop to zillions of famous film car chases, San Francisco has a much more laidback vibe than self-conscious LA in the south. Explore the city’s major icons – Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz – then retire to the many fabulous bars and restaurants.

Miami, Florida
Stylish Miami offers art deco architecture, sexy beaches and boutique shopping, as well as the natural wonders of the Everglades and Florida Keys. Eccentricity is a plus here, so get ready to meet some interesting locals, who might just include the odd alligator.
