4. Olu Deniz, Turkey
This Turkish resort is home to a stunning blue lagoon surrounded by hills, and is consequently Turkey’s most photographed beach. Admire the view from the air with a spot of paragliding or go sailing aboard a traditional Turkish gulet. Nature-lovers will love Butterfly Valley.

5. Alghero, Sardinia
Around Alghero you'll find some fab sandy beaches, many backed by trees (if you’re in search of some shade). In the town itself there is a tangle of cobbled streets to explore, which are packed with bars and restaurants. Head out to Neptune’s Grotto, a complex of impressive caves, best accessed on a boat trip.

6. Porto Vecchio, Corsica
Here you get the best of both worlds, with an elegant lively centre and a huge choice of beaches nearby. Palombaggia Beach is perhaps the most famous, with the white sand, pine trees and incredibly blue sea making it postcard-perfect. It gets busy in the high season but there are plenty of other fab beaches all along the coast.

7. Crete, Greece
Maleme is one of Crete’s most gorgeous beaches on an island hardly lacking in gorgeous beaches. It is famous for being the site of the Battle of Crete in WWII. Today, it's an unspoilt, relaxed place with the pebbly beach as its focal point. At night, watch a spectacular sunset then head to a taverna.
