Stress-free travel: How to travel in style

Islands in the sunset (c) Rex

• Music player with charger and headphones/speakers

• A good book is a must – see our beach reads feature for ideas. Guide books and phrase books can come in pretty handy too

• Ear plugs or eye mask if you’re a light sleeper

• A travel pillow and a snug extra layer for long journeys

• Playing cards are great for making friends and taking the sting out of transport delays

• A bottle of water – buy it in the airport after you’ve been through security so it isn’t confiscated.

• Moisturiser or lip balm – the air in planes dries your skin out quickly

• Snacks – sweets you can suck are good for popping your ears when flying, and nothing beats the smugness of getting out a tasty picnic while the people around you on your budget flight pay nine pounds for a packet of Pringles
