As sparks fly around the country on Bonfire Night, tonight seems a perfect moment to look back at some classic occasions when tempers were also ignited on the football field.

From Kevin Keegan and Billy Bremner's infamous Charity Shield punch-up to the hilarious running battle between Inter Milan and Valencia in last season's Champions League, there's often nothing more entertaining than a good old dust-up when the football itself is becoming a little dull.

Back in the 1970s and 80s, when a player had to commit common assault just to receive a booking, proper punch-ups were pretty regular. But with hard nuts such as Roy Keane and David Batty in the modern era, there was no shortage of more recent thuggery to pick from either.
