UK Athletics have been forced to include Dwain Chambers in the Great Britain team for the World Indoor Championships in Valencia against their wishes.

The sprinter made himself indispensible to the squad by winning the 60 metres at the national trials in Sheffield on Sunday in 6.55 seconds

The selection committee did not want to select Chambers because of his record of using performance enhancing drugs, which earned him a two-year ban.

A statement issued by the UKA World Indoors selection committee read: "The committee was unanimous in its desire not to select Dwain.

"Taking him to the World Indoors deprives young, upwardly mobile committed athletes of this key development opportunity.

"Unfortunately, the committee felt that the selection criteria pertaining to the Trials' winner and the manner of Dwain's performance left them no room to take any other decision.

"We will certainly explore ways in which future selections can be made to match the true "spirit" of our sport."
