A bloodstained babygro belonging to the nine-month-old daughter of murder suspect Neil Entwistle has been shown to a jury.
Entwistle did not look at the suit and a pair of polka dot pyjamas as they were held up less than five feet away from the jurors, instead staring straight ahead at the judge's bench. His mother Yvonne, from Kilton, Worksop, collapsed in her seat and cried.
A forensic scientist said scorchmarks on the piece of clothing showed the muzzle of the gun had been pressed against her chest when Lillian Entwistle was shot.
She was killed alongside her 27-year-old mother Rachel at their home in Hopkinton, Massachusetts.
Earlier, Rachel's blood-stained green shirt and floral underwear were shown to the Massachusetts court as a forensic scientist explained how they were both stained with blood and semen.
Entwistle's DNA was found on the grip of the .22 Colt revolver used to kill his wife and daughter, an ammunition container and a gun lock, while the DNA of Mrs Entwistle, who had no interest in guns, was found 'both in and on the muzzle', the court heard.
The jury has heard that a post-mortem examination found Mrs Entwistle was shot in the forehead at close range and Lillian was killed with a bullet which passed through her abdomen and lodged above her mother's left breast as she cradled her in the four-poster bed in the master bedroom of their home.
Assistant District Attorney Michael Fabbri, prosecuting, has said Entwistle had a secret life in which he trawled the internet for escorts and looked at websites about bankruptcy, killing and suicide before shooting his family.
He faces life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted of the double murder, which he denies.
