UN call to scrap nuclear weapons

The UN Security Council has unanimously approved a resolution calling on states with nuclear weapons to scrap their deadly arsenals.

The historic summit meeting was chaired by US President Barack Obama, who made it clear this is a turning point for the global effort to control nuclear weapons.

He said: 'The next 12 months will be absolutely critical in determining whether this resolution and our overall efforts to stop the spread and use of nuclear weapons are successful.'

It is the fifth time the Security Council has met at the level of heads of state since it was established in 1946.

It is also the first time a US president has chaired a meeting of the 15-nation elite panel.
