New York man's body dragged 20 miles

The body of a man has been identified after he was dragged almost 20 miles through New York by a van.

Ecuadorian pedestrian Guido Salvador Carabajo-Jara, 26, was hit by a car driven by Gustavo Acosta as he attempted to cross the road in Queens.

Mr Acosta stopped his vehicle and went to call emergency services but in the intervening minutes, a van which had been travelling behind him unknowingly drove over Mr Carabajo-Jara's body, which became hooked on to a steel plate.

Lituma Sanchez, the unsuspecting driver, then dragged the body away.

Despite stopping at one point to check if his vehicle had engine trouble, Mr Sanchez did not discover the body until a passer-by flagged the driver down to alert him to something dragging under the van.

The gruesome discovery was made almost an hour later in Brooklyn.

Officers arriving the scene found a business card, money transfer slip and a mobile phone on the body.

Mr Carabajo-Jara was identified by his cousin on Thursday.

Mr Sanchez said: 'I didn't feel anything, and I didn't hear anything.'

Police said Mr Carabajo-Jara's death was accidental and have no plans to charge either driver.
