It is reported the man who tackled suicide bombers during the 2007 Glasgow airport terror attacks will aim to become an MP at the next election.

John Smeaton is expected to be unveiled as an independent candidate in the Glasgow North East by-election.

That is the Parliamentary seat vacated by the former Speaker of the House of Commons Michael Martin.

The by-election was triggered when Mr Martin stood down in June in the wake of the row over MPs' expenses.

The former baggage handler's bid to win the key seat is sponsored by political movement Jury Team.

The 33-year-old told the Sun newspaper he was 'ready to rock the boat' in Westminster.
