The Duke of Edinburgh has been forced to spend a third night in hospital after undergoing treatment for a chest infection.

Philip, 86, was seen by consultants at the private King Edward VII Hospital in central London on Saturday.

Buckingham Palace said the Duke's engagements for Monday have not been cancelled, prompting speculation that he will be discharged on Sunday after another assessment.

Well-wishers including the actress Joanna Lumley, an old friend of Prince Philip, called at the hospital to deliver flowers.

The Duke was pictured smiling and laughing with the French president Nicolas Sarkozy's new wife Carla Bruni during their recent state visit.

But he was forced to pull out of a memorial service for Sir Edmund Hillary on Wednesday after coming down with a bad cold.

Prince Philip is being treated by the Physician to the Queen, Harley Street doctor Professor John Cunningham.

The Duke, who has been married to the Queen since 1947, has enjoyed good health even into old age, with most ailments related to polo injuries.

On Monday, he is due to attend two engagements at Windsor Castle - a council meeting and a dinner to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel.
