The Feeling – ‘Without You’

The Feeling – ‘Without You’

The latest in a long line of singles that uses a still-fresh American tragedy as an analogy for the weather in London… oh, maybe it’s a new idea, actually. It’s certainly a crass one, as Dan Gillespie Sells croons about the Virginia Tech shootings while wondering if he’s missed in rainy old “London town”. Perhaps it seemed like a masterstroke as he sucked his pen over the lyric sheet, but somehow amid the usual lush melody, pristine pop hooks and delicate playing, it all feels a bit weird.

Cajun Dance Party – ‘The Race’

Cajun Dance Party – ‘The Race’

This North London quintet might only finish school this year but they’ve written so many songs they’re set to release two albums in 2008, one next week and one in October. An ambitious and potentially foolhardy strategy if their youthful vigour isn’t matched by quality songwriting, and on first listen their Libertines-esque bluster suggests they might not have the staying power. Repeated spins prove they’ve got ideas and imagination above your average indie poppers, however. Halfway through, a distorted guitar crashes into the jaunty pop backing and ’The Race’ builds into a splendid plinky-plonky keyboard crescendo, complete with strings. We’ll wait and see how those albums turn out, but this is an interesting overture.
