Bumblebeez – ‘Rio’

Bumblebeez – ‘Rio’

Tragically not a cover of Duran Duran’s yachts-and-pastel-suits ‘80s behemoth, this is a quite extraordinarily dated slab of hip-hop electronica that might have sneaked out during Norman Cook’s domination of the pop scene under his Fatboy Slim guise – yep, that long ago. Bumblebeez are an Australian duo with an endless supply of this kind of thing, and, while there’s nothing particularly terrible about ‘Rio’, it’s difficult to see where it might fit in now. They should start making Bassline House. We need more of that.

Crystal Castles – ‘Courtship Dating’

Crystal Castles – ‘Courtship Dating’

Ethan Kath and Alice Glass met while working with the blind in Toronto, before recording their debut single ‘Alice Practice’ “by accident”. “Practice”, you see? Anyway, it’s easy to see how they might stumble upon songs, because ‘Courtship Dating’ sounds like a flurry of ancient computer games all recorded at once with Minnie Mouse squeaking over the top. Minnie’s singing in tune, but the bleeps and squelches are finding their way in the world all by themselves. It’s the most electronic electronica out there, and is rather great.
