Rightmove claims to have more than one million properties online at any one time. It offers homes for sale from major estate agents including Fox & Sons, Foxtons, Bairstow Eves, Townends, haart and Barnard Marcus. You can search by area, by property type and by new home or resale.
Propertyfinder.com boasts around 350,000 homes from estate agents including Fox & Sons, Foxtons, Barnard Marcus and haart.
Hotproperty.co.uk may also be worth a look, as it lists more than 200,000 properties from a mixture of local and chain estate agents.

All of these sites offer an email alert service: you enter your criteria (location, maximum price, number of bedrooms, etc.) and they send you an email every time a potentially appropriate property is put on the market.
This gives you a possible head start on other house-hunters in your area. Many estate agent websites now offer video or 360-degree photo tours of properties for sale, so you can do all the search from the comfort of your own chair.
Some cutting-edge estate agents, such as Douglas & Gordon, also offer a text service.
You text a number, displayed on the For Sale board outside the property, and almost instantly you’ll be sent the estate agent details of the property you’re looking at.
