Green taxes

The Budget had more than a green tinge, with Alistair Darling revealing plans to increase the cut in carbon emissions from 60% to 80% by 2050 and to make all new non-domestic buildings zero-carbon by 2019. The cost of driving a “gas guzzler” will also increase from 2010

He called on retailers to stop giving out free plastic carrier bags by next year – or the Government will put a tax on them. Do these steps go far enough to help the environment and us? Here’s what you’ve said:

I sometimes wonder what people have against me.  I don't smoke, don't drink still run a family business even though I am over 60.  Yes I do drive a Landrover Discovery top of the range 4 x 4 and I love it.  I don't take foriegn holidays so don't fly.  I live 9 miles from the nearest town and 2 miles from a village over 1,000 ft. above sea level the winters are harsh and the summers wet.  So if some of the townies down in the southeast would like to swap with me for a few weeks and try to use public transport or a small car with three large dogs in the back towing a horse box feel free otherwise try to see things from other peoples point of view occasionally and don't be so selfish. - Posted on the forum by 4x4granny | 12 March 2008 at 3:45 PM

I think charging people for carrier bags is a good idea, but if its only a few pence per bag, it will not make any difference. - Posted on the blog by Dilip Kandaiah | 12 March 2008 at 16:10

WHY doesn't the government increase the cost of petrol by 10p per litre and scrap car vehicle excise duty (car tax). This would mean that users of big cars paid more to travel, the more miles you do the higher the cost. It would encourage the use of small cars and encourage you to restrict driving. - Posted on the forum by telboy62 | 12 March 2008 at 3:25 PM

Mr Darling I would advise you take your budget report, put it in a plastic bag and drop it in the recycling bin, you never know it may come out the other end looking alot better than it does now! - Posted on the blog by sandra | 12 March 2008 at 14:59
