Everybody remembers Transformers. There’s been a Transformers cartoon for every generation over the last 20 years, and now that the movie is about to hit the big screen, gamers have Transformers games coming out their ears. The big question is – will you be an Autobot or a Decepticon?
The DS versions of the movie tie-in games have something more to them than the other versions: they have more of a “pick up and play” feel to them, they are open world (just like the bigger home console versions), and there are two of them. You can play the Autobots game or the Decepticons game, and they feel quite different. Play the Autobot version and you’ll be protecting humans and preventing Decepticon attacks. In the Decepticon game it’s really all about causing as much destruction as possible. You’ll get to play the major characters from either side, depending on which version you buy, but you’ll spend most of your time as your own customisable character. Great fun was had having our Orange-atron robot find and unlock the 37 different transformations available as every car truck and aeroplane you can think of.
You spend most of your time running around the city climbing on buildings, creating huge craters when landing after a jump and riding around as your chosen vehicle. You’ll take on missions which will see you fight other robots, racing or destroying stuff. The missions can be repetitive and a bit dull, the city isn’t as populated as we’d like and although the voiceovers are great, the graphics are a little bland. Despite all this, Transformers is still a decent movie tie-in game that achieves at least some of its ambitions. This is a game that is certainly more than meets the eye.
