The Megaman games have been around for 20 years now and as a series that boasts almost 100 titles in its canon the games have built up a huge following. ZX is the first game on the DS – and it’s a beauty.

You can choose between playing as a girl, Aile, or boy, Vent, with two different story arcs for the characters – a first for the series. You play a courier working for Giro Express delivery service. While delivering some strange material called biometal, evil Maverick robots attack you. Your character fuses to the biometal and you become Model X a type of Megaman with super powers. You can unlock 4 other types of Model X by collecting biometals which have various abilities, such as lightning attacks, and weapons like throwing stars. The game takes place over a massive sprawling map with varied environments, from a forest to a factory. As you fight the Maverick robots you can switch between the Model X’s easily to make use of their abilities.

It’s all fairly par for the course gameplay for the Megaman series, so if you’re a long-time fan of the games don’t be expecting anything very different. Traversing the map can be very hard because you’ll have to beat certain bosses to access new areas, but it’s not always obvious where you should be headed. Battles are hard and frequent, but overall this is a slightly easier game than some of the previous “rock hard” games in the series.

ZX is an exceptional addition to the Megaman series: fans will love it and those new to the series could find no better introduction to it. Just don’t expect to be able to pick up and play for a few minutes at a time. This will require a mega amount of your gaming time.

8/10
