There are few great examples of truly scary games. Silent Hill, Condemned and F.E.A.R. all wanted to make you fling your controller in the air and hide behind the sofa. Appearing first on the PC at the end of 2005, F.E.A.R. went on to scare the hell out of gamers on the X360 last year. With the games industry always moving at breakneck speed, does the now two-year-old title have anything to offer PS3 owners?
For a first-person-shooter, F.E.A.R. has a strong storyline. You’re sent to find out what happened to a US Special-Ops team who’ve been completely obliterated by unseen forces in an aerospace compound. Discovering their fate, and the force behind it, is your remit. It all gets very creepy once you’re in there, with invisible enemies attacking from above and behind and a creepy little girl who pops up occasionally to spook you out. The game does a great job of unnerving you and putting off your concentration and aim.
The PS3 version has exclusive maps and comes with an excellent online deathmatch mode for up to 16 players. It also features a superb exclusive weapon in the form of a rapid-fire shotgun. Keep in mind though, that the X360 and PC versions also have their own exclusive content so there’s little to recommend the PS3 version. The graphics are pretty but certainly don’t compare with the likes of Half-Life 2 or Gears of War. But if you’re looking for a solid FPS for your PS3, you can’t go wrong with F.E.A.R. – even after all this time, it’s still a great game with meaty weapons, fluid controls and it’ll leave you a twitchy nervous wreck after playing it. Feel the fear!
