The X360 isn’t exactly overburdened with great racing games. Until now, the 18-month-old PGR3 has been king of the racers so every driving fan has been praying that Forza 2 would live up to its Xbox predecessor, give PGR a run for its money and deliver us a fresh new racer. Sure enough, as soon as you take your first car out for a spin in Career mode you know instantly that outstanding times await. The physics are exceptional and the options for difficulty, tracks, cars and customisation mean you’ll still be playing it months down the line.

There are more than 300 cars in the game and they all feel different. The realism and depth are truly extraordinary while not leaving newcomers stalling at the starting line. You can tune up your cars in ever more complex ways as you level them up in career mode to create monster speed demons with excellent handling. The tracks don’t look wildly different from each other, despite having 18 different environments from across the world to race around, but each has its own quirks. There are also 13 real-life circuits to race on which is a great boon for fans of the sport itself.

You can customise your cars with an incredible variety of parts, paint jobs and decals. While customising is easy to do, you’ll find it sucks away hours as you try to get every detail right. You can then photograph and upload your motors to the Forza 2 website to show off, gift it to a friend to play with or auction it on Xbox Live for in–game credits. Best of all, you can take your creation online and do some career racing where you’ll continue to gain experience for your driver and car or participate in tournaments.

Between the excellent physics, variety of tracks, modes and cars available – as well as the top notch customisation – Forza 2 has managed to pull out in front as the best racer on the 360. Get your engine running then motor down to the game shop…
