Ashes to Ashes: the lowdown

Ashes to Ashes, Thursday 9pm, BBC1

DCI Gene Hunt is back, in full “put your knickers on and make me a cup of tea, love” effect.

In 2008, police psychologist DI Alex Drake is shot in the head in a hostage situation that turns bad…

… and she wakes up, dressed like a hooker. On a yacht. In 1981.

If you've seen Life On Mars, this will all feel somewhat familiar. Not that John Simm ever dressed up like a hooker.

But here it is – the eagerly anticipated Ashes To Ashes, in which Alex is certain that she is in a coma and that Gene, and everything else, is a figment of her imagination.

Back in 2008, Alex had been researching the case of DI Sam Tyler, who had made copious notes about his own experience in a 1973 coma.

Alex, driven to get back to her 12-year-old daughter Molly, figures that Sam's experiences are informing her own subconscious.

Episode one sets the scene, with Gene revealing that Alex has been "transferred" to his police division.

One key difference: this is set in London, with Gene a smaller fish in a bigger, more modern pond. But still tackling criminals in his own inimitable way…
