Echo Beach / Moving Wallpaper
Why the two titles?
This is a really clever idea. Jason Donovan, Martine McCutcheon and Hugo Speer star in ITV1's new Hollyoaks-ish post-watershed soap Echo Beach, about the lives and loves of the residents of a Cornish surfing village. That's not the clever bit, obviously.
This is: Echo Beach is preceded by Moving Wallpaper, a separate but interlinking behind-the-scenes comedy series about the making of the soap. Ben Miller stars as Jonathan Pope, Echo Beach's egomaniac producer, and the show follows his crazed efforts to get the soap on air.
Moving Wallpaper features the real-life actors of Echo Beach playing (versions of) themselves and sending up the process of making a big-budget show. Much fun is had with jokes about Martine's diva behaviour or and how to break the eleventh-hour news to the show's long-suffering writers that Jason has been signed up for the entire series and not just one episode.
"There are loads of little jokes between the two shows," says Ben. "You'll see a prop, or a line, or something that has been talked about in Moving Wallpaper and that'll pop up in Echo Beach. It's really layered and so clever the way they interplay."
