Sergeant’s army bombards the Beeb

John Sergeant and Kristina Rihanoff

The BBC has received more than 20,000 complaints from disgruntled fans following John Sergeant’s shock resignation from Strictly Come Dancing on Wednesday.

Almost half of the irate viewers have expressed their disgust on the BBC’s messageboard, while 2,000 preferred to send in direct complaints. The remaining complainants have signed an online petition demanding the star’s reinstatement immediately.

The petition has been set up by 47-year-old Strictly fan John Tilley, who is Very Angry Indeed. “It is scandalous John has gone,” he raged. “He was the best thing about the show. The whole country wants him back,” he added, perhaps exaggerating somewhat.

Meanwhile, the BBC has confirmed that anyone who’s previously voted for John is entitled to claim their money back in full – something 79% of his fans are reportedly planning to do, according to one survey. It could leave Beeb bosses facing a bill for tens of thousands of pounds.

The former political commentator and self-styled “dancing pig in Cuban heels” will make his final appearance on the show this weekend, when he and partner Kristina Rihanoff are rumoured to be doing a waltz to the Sophie Ellis-Bextor hit ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’. Hankies at the ready!
