Robin Hood axed

Robin Hood

He’s spent years of his life fighting off the evil Sherriff of Nottingham, but Robin Hood’s been pierced by an arrow from an entirely different source this morning – the bigwigs upstairs at the BBC.

Following Jonas Armstrong’s decision to quit the show, the axe was finally swung on the ailing Saturday evening show after it attracted a paltry 1.7 million viewers last weekend. In its heyday, more than four times that amount tuned in to watch the men in tights.

“We are sad to be saying goodbye to this much loved project,” sniffed producer Greg Brenman. The show’s hero was despatched in a typically violent fashion in last weekend’s series finale, when he was offed by a poison arrow after killing the Sheriff of Nottingham, played by Keith Allen.

And it’s not just bad news for all those extras running around in Lincoln green tights. Local tourism gurus are concerned that the show’s cancellation could have an adverse effect. “The television programme had helped garner new interest in the legend,” said Experience Nottinghamshire's Alex Green.

"We've certainly enjoyed the benefits of the programme's popularity in terms of increased visitors to Nottinghamshire,” she added.

Still, everyone knows he was actually from Yorkshire, anyway…
