Nation divided over Gail Trimble
|
It’s not often University Challenge makes a splash with the nation’s lads mags, but the emergence of Corpus Christie college’s Gail Trimble as the UK’s favourite brainbox may well change all that. It seems Gail, who was personally responsible a whopping two thirds of her team’s correct answers en route to last night’s final, is now on the radar of Nuts magazine.
“Would you believe it, my brother received a Facebook message from Nuts yesterday morning saying 'Can we have your sister's email address, we want her to do a tasteful shoot'," Gail confessed. "So of course he sent them an answer saying: 'Seriously mate, would you give your sister's contact details to Nuts?'" Hmmm… well, for a small fee, quite possibly Gail.
But anyway, it sounds like we won’t be seeing Ms Trimble seductively holding a pencil to her mouth anytime soon in a Nuts centrefold - which will come as a relief to her many detractors in the Blogosphere, who have been responsible for some scathing attacks on her perceived smugness, as well as her personal appearance.
"Suddenly there's this thing that involves being in the public eye, and I find all this reaction to me, and I'm sure this wouldn't be the case if I wasn't a woman," Gail told the BBC in an interview. "It is nice when people are saying nice things about my appearance, and not nasty things, but it's sad that they feel it necessary to say things about my appearance at all."
Gail’s team romped to victory in last night’s series final, thrashing the University of Manchester by a remarkable 275 points to 190. One bedraggled opponent even likened her to "an intellectual blitzkrieg". Oh, and that’s a compliment, by the way.
