Ken’s Christmas crisis

Ken Barlow as Santa

Christmas may be a time of giving, but Ken Barlow (he of the cardigans and ineffectual attempts at infidelity) turns into Scrooge when he gets a job as Santa at a local department store.

In side-splitting scenes to be screened in the build-up to Christmas Day, soap fans will see Weatherfield’s resident intellectual being given the sack by store bosses for upsetting the children by telling them Christmas is about family values, not expensive gadgets.

As if that wasn’t embarrassing enough, Ken also loudly berates his grandson Simon’s other granddad for splashing too much cash on the boy’s presents.

As Santa’s little helpers run around trying to comfort the sobbing children, the shop manager tells Ken: “Get out of my store and don’t set foot in here again.”

Afterwards, Ken becomes so grumpy he and Deirdre have a ding-dong merrily on high, with his long-suffering wife warning: “If you’re not careful you’ll be spend flaming Christmas without me!”
