Piers Morgan's Life Stories, ITV1, Sunday 10pm Three star rating

Sharon Osbourne and Piers Morgan

"It's a bit like putting yourself voluntarily into Hannibal Lecter's cage." That’s how Piers Morgan describes the prospect of an interview with über-rock chick and national treasure Sharon Osbourne. And he's not wrong. This, after all, is the woman who used to send her detractors gifts of her children's faeces, wrapped in Tiffany boxes.

Sharon is the inaugural guest on the deposed tabloid editor's latest small-screen outing, which sees him grilling a string of celebrities about their amazing lives. Filmed in front of a studio audience, the hour-long show is cut with contributions from Sharon's friends and family, including the first-ever UK interview with her daughter Aimee; even her surgeon gets a look in. And it isn't long before a common theme emerges. "She does have a wicked temper," her best friend admits, while a former boyfriend warns: “You don't want to be on the wrong side of Sharon."

We see Sharon's venomous side for ourselves when Piers quizzes her about her much-publicised falling out with fellow X Factor judge Dannii Minogue. Having already stuck the knife into the fragrant Ms Minogue on several previous occasions, Sharon really goes for broke this time. "I left X Factor because of Dannii Minogue," the mum-of-three declares. "I didn't enjoy working with her at all and when I was faced with the prospect of spending another six months sat next to her, I thought, 'My life's better than this. I'm not going to do it'."

And that's just the opening salvo. When Piers asks, "Why didn't you like her?", Sharon fires back, "Where do you want me to begin?" before reeling off a list of Dannii's less attractive qualities. If that wasn't enough to whet your appetite, Sharon also talks in moving and riveting detail about her volatile relationship with her father, legendary music manager Don Arden, and the moment husband Ozzy tried to kill her.

Next week Piers will be chatting to Sir Richard Branson. We're already reaching for that Sky+ button…
