Corrie hotpot shock

Betty Williams

For decades, the good folk of Coronation Street have liked nothing better than a steaming plate of Betty's hotpot, washed down with a pint of Newton & Ridley's Old & Filthy – but now the Rovers Return delicacy is about to strike fear into their hearts.

The drama unfolds as the Weatherfield Gazette launches a competition to find "Manchester's Oldest Barmaid". Believing that Betty, who celebrates her 90th birthday in February, is the surefire winner, Rovers landlord Steve McDonald throws a party. However, the celebrations are interrupted when local pensioner Enid Crump arrives in the pub and announces that the title's hers, as she's still working in The Parsons Arms boozer at the ripe old age of 91.

In a bid to calm her down, Steve offers her a free sherry and a hotpot – but accidentally microwaves a dish of Betty's signature dish that's been festering at the back of the fridge for two months. Later, he and Betty are horrified to learn that Enid has been rushed to a doctor and is at death's door with food poisoning.

A panic-stricken Betty tells Steve: "It's murder. I'll have killed her. I'm too old to go to prison. I'll never come out alive." But he tries to reassure her, saying: "I'm sure it'll be fine. You can't murder someone with a hotpot. The police will understand it was an accident. And look on the bright side: if Enid dies, you can then officially call yourself the undisputed Oldest Barmaid in Town." Soap fans will have to wait until early next year to see whether or not Enid pulls through.
