Apprentice Phil: ‘I was like a puppy dog’

He faced an ignominious firing at the hands of Sir Alan Sugar in The Apprentice last night, but Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor is remarkably penitent, saying his eye strayed from the prize thanks to fellow contestant (and love interest) Kate Walsh.

“It started the minute she walked in,” said the estate agent. “I saw her smiling but I wasn’t going to let myself be distracted by a beautiful woman. That lasted for six hours.”

“In this particular task when were stuck together, the only way to describe it would be… You know in those terrible ‘70s films when the girl walks on screen, things go into slow motion and they start playing The Carpenters? It was a bit like that.”

Blimey, we’d love a peek inside Philip’s head. But the Geordie gallantly defended Kate, saying their relationship didn’t affect her concentration. “For me it did, not for her,” he added. “I was like a puppy dog – I admit that. I blew it. I’m an honest person, and I made a mess of it and it was basically down to what was going on.”

Sir Alan’s right hand man Nick Hewer, writing in the Daily Mirror and presumably squinting like nobody’s business in the process, concurred. “When people get romantically involved, their attention is off the ball. It affected Philip's performance," he wrote.

“Philip saying, ‘I'd buy anything from Kate,’ was our first real hint something was going on. Thereafter, they were always snuggled up in the back of the Chrysler. Their flirting meant they weren't focused on the task – no good decisions can be made if they are making cow eyes at each other.”

As ever, the voice of reason…

Philip, you're fired! The end of BB? Dannii quitting X Factor?
