Sergeant stays in Strictly
|
At ease, Sergeant. Yes, John Sergeant, a man so bad at dancing that being told he has two left feet would be considered a gushing plaudit, is still in Strictly Come Dancing 10 weeks into the competition – and some people aren’t happy.
One of those is judge Arlene Phillips, who sounded like she was about to blow a fuse on BBC Breakfast this morning, despite describing the journalist as “quite endearing” on Saturday’s show. “He's not making much effort,” she raged. “The dancers are constantly working – but John just sits there and reads the paper.”
“A lot of people are non-stop practising, [but] to achieve what? Why don't the girls just all throw off their clothes and the boys do a comedy dance. Is that going to help?”
Actually, that sounds like a great idea for a show – are you listening, ITV? Anyway, the celebrity to leave was Cherie Lunghi, even though John scored a lowly 25 out of 40 (his best score so far, as it happens) and her dance partner James Jordan was gutted.
"I think Cherie had a lot more to show. This is supposed to be a dance contest," said the nimble-footed performer. "Please, please, people at home, vote for the dancing."
But one show insider thought the gag might have reached its conclusion. “This might be the tipping point,” said the source. “People at home will see that the competition has got to the stage that those getting kicked out in place of John had a real chance of winning.”
We think it’s all rather funny.
