Mum’s the word for Alex

Triumphant X Factor winner Alexandra Burke looks almost certain to bag this year’s coveted Christmas No.1 spot - and plans to use her new found fame to help her seriously ill mum achieve a better standard of life.
“I don’t want people thinking I went on The X Factor just because my mum’s really, really ill and I have to get her a kidney,” said the newly-crowned winner. “But I do want to make a career so I can get her better treatment – and I do want a better life for me and my family, that’s my main concern.”
Alex’s mum, former Soul II Soul singer Melissa Bell, tragically collapsed with kidney failure in July last year. She now has dialysis three times a week as she awaits a kidney transplant.
Happily, Melissa didn’t miss her daughter’s big moment on Saturday night as first feared. Alex was worried that the final clashed with a hospital appointment, but in the end Melissa managed to make it to the studio. “My whole family was there and the first thing my mum said was, ‘I’m so proud of you and I love you’.” Aw.
Alex has also revealed that mentor Cheryl Cole has somewhat harshly slapped a ban on boys for the foreseeable future. “Cheryl told me to keep away from men. There will be no romance – I’m all about the music,” cooed Alex. Right on.
