Robbie defends X Factor performance

Robbie Williams has defended his performance on The X Factor after it was branded a shambles.

The star appeared on Saturday night's show – his first live performance in three years – but seemed agitated and sweaty while dancing erratically around stage.

One insider described it like "watching your dad dance at a wedding".

Robbie has admitted he didn't get off to the best start as he sang his new single ‘Bodies’ – after a stage door jammed.

He claims he had a striking pose prepared for the moment he arrived on stage, but it was thrown into chaos by the faulty door.

He told the Daily Mirror: "At this point in the rehearsals the music starts... the doors open. But live... the music starts... the doors don't open.

"So we're a few seconds in and the doors remain closed... a few more seconds and they're still closed.

"Now, I don't know if you've ever had 10 million people plus ready to judge you on your first performance back in three years...

"But let me tell you, if the door between you and them isn't opening that's enough to throw you right off your stride. I had to wedge it open myself. That wasn't part of the show."

Last year's X Factor winner Alexandra Burke, who performed shortly before Robbie, had sung her new single ‘Bad Boys’ perfectly.

An X Factor insider told the paper: "It was all a bit embarrassing as Alexandra had put in this amazingly polished performance.

"Then out came Robbie and, frankly, it all seemed a bit shambolic. The dancing was clearly not choreographed and he looked like someone's dad at a wedding."

Speaking about the performance Robbie wrote on his blog: "After a bizarrely odd start to the 3.30 minutes I started to find my feet. The audience were immense and the love in the room was palpable.

"It all felt so electric. Like three years of anxiety leaving my body."
