Madonna: ‘Don’t call me Madge’

The Queen of Pop has signalled her anger at being referred to as “Madge” during an interview with chat show host David Letterman. She said the nickname, which ex-husband Guy Ritchie was apparently rather fond of, made her feel "boring and middle-aged".

"You know, that's one of the reasons I left England, so I don't have to hear the word 'Madge' any more,” she groaned on American TV. "People say it means two different things. Some people say that 'Madge' is a colloquialism – do you know that word? – for kind of like a boring, middle-aged housewife. And other people say it's short for 'Majesty'."

Hmmm… well, we know which definition of “Madge” we’ll be sticking to, thank you very much. La Ciccone was rumoured to be none too pleased about sharing the name with a couple of other famous Madges – Neighbours matriarch Madge Bishop and Dame Edna Everage’s glum-faced sidekick, both of whom probably aren’t much older than the singer herself.

Madge Madonna also scotched rumours she’s on the verge of marrying her Brazilian lover Jesus Luz. "I think I would rather get run over by a train." she scoffed, as the 22-year-old model frantically called Ernest Jones to ask if he could get a refund on the ring he bought.
