Studious Emma puts acting on hold

Swotty Hermione Granger, her character in the Harry Potter films, would almost certainly approve: Emma Watson has decided to give up acting in order to concentrate on her education.

Emma, 18, will finish the final Potter film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows next year. Then, perhaps inspired by JK Rowling, she is hoping to have a wizard time reading English literature.

"I would like to go to university and complete a degree and so that will mean a break from acting," said Emma. "I've always tried to balance my education with my acting career, but I just don't think it will be possible to juggle it with a degree course. I have a need now to study."

Emma, who has made £10m from the Potter films, has not decided where she will study and is torn between going to America or remaining in Britain.

"There are excellent universities over there and I'm applying at the moment," she said. "If I stay in this country I will read English Literature, and if I go to America I would do a Liberal Arts programme."
