Natalie: ‘I almost had a breakdown’

Natalie Cassidy

Poor Natalie Cassidy is certainly having a rough time of it at the moment. Just a few days after admitting that her weight loss regime of last year veered dangerously close to anorexia, the ex-EastEnder has revealed that the death of her Albert Square co-star and “second mum” Wendy Richard almost caused her to have a breakdown.

“I wasn’t well,” admitted Nat. “I wouldn’t call it a breakdown, but I was under so much pressure I think I was on the brink of one. I did see a therapist for a little while, about lots of different things.

“They were a bereavement specialist – my mum died seven years ago, then I made some bad choices and I lost myself. I then fell out with some of my family and friends. I got myself back on track, though, and made up with my family, but that’s when it all suddenly hit me – I miss my mum more than ever, and the day Wendy died I hit rock bottom.”

Natalie, who played Sonia Jackson in the BBC soap, also revealed that Wendy left her a lucky necklace when she died. “It’s supposed to bring you luck with your career and ever since I’ve had it I’ve had nothing but happiness, luck, jobs and money coming in,” she said.

“For the first time in a long time I’m in a good place. The counsellor helped me with that – now, for the first time in my life, I’m me and I feel no one is telling me what to do. No one is judging me.”
