The Scarsdale Diet

This is a low-carbohydrate, high protein plan that works on the principle that certain foods shouldn't be eaten together because in combination they don't benefit your health and cause you to gain weight. It comes from the book The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet by Herman Taranower and Samm Sinclair Baker. The claim is that you can lose up to 20lb in two weeks.

How does it work?
You are told exactly what foods you should eat three times a day. The meals you eat contain veg, fruit and lean protein in unlimited amounts. You are not allowed to snack and you are encouraged to take herbal appetite suppressants.

How long do you do it for?
Seven to fourteen days.

Advantages
- There's no calorie counting and portion sizes are as big as you want them to be

- You won't go hungry

- Weight loss can be rapid

Disadvantages
- Herbal appetite suppressants can be hazardous for some people, such as those with high blood pressure

- Following this plan may leave you low in many vitamins and minerals

- Losing 20lb of weight in two weeks won't be loss of fat but water and carbohydrate reserves - and you are likely to put it all back on again when you come off the diet
