Lamborghini picked up its first ever win in British GT history after Tech 9 driver pairing Oliver Morley and Tom Ferrier took a surprise win in race two of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship.

The result delighted the crowd at Oulton Park with local lad Morley taking the chequered flag in the Gallardo.

Victory had looked destined to go the way of Allan Simonsen and Hector Lester in the Ferrari 430 but they were handed a 20-second stop-go penalty after Simonsen missed a pit-stop window.

Afterwards Ferrier, who drove the first stint of the race in the Gallardo, said: "It was a pretty hectic race but thankfully we had some luck with Allan's drive-through. It was unfortunate for them but fortunate for us."

Morley took the car over the finishing line less than a second clear of Michael Meadows and James Sutton in another Ferrari. But Morley admitted he had no idea where he'd initially finished.

"I didn't really know what position I was in and it was only after passing the line and seeing the crowds cheering that I realised I'd won," he admitted. "The crowds were great and it was a great win."

Ferrari had looked on course to dominate the weekend with the Italian marque sealing a one-two-three in race one on Saturday.

On that occasion, Paddy Shovlin and Michael Cullen took the honours for early-season favourites CR Scuderia, with VRS Motor Finance pairing Phil Burton and Adam Wilcox. And Simonsen and Lester rounded off the Ferrari trio in third for Christians in Motorsport, with just half-a-second separating the leading trio.

It was an incident-packed race from start to finish as poleman Meadows ploughed through a chicane and was forced into the pits soon after the start.

There was even greater drama on lap eight when Hunter Abbott's Ginetta G50 clashed with the Aston Martin of Peter Snowden. Abbott flew off the track and rolled a number of times before coming to rest in the grass.

As a result of the accident - from which Abbott walked away unscathed - the race was red-flagged and re-run.

Shovlin led from the restart, an advantage that remained when team-mate Cullen took over in the pits and he remained just in front of the chasing Ferraris for the narrowest of victories.

"It's unbelievable to win the first race of the season, especially because of the last time I raced here in 1999 I missed out," said Cullen afterwards.

"Paddy couldn't have done a better job for me and, although I had the slowest of the three leading cars, I  also had the widest so I was able to keep Adam and Allan at bay."
