corporate responsibility
What is corporate responsibility?
Corporate responsibility is a way of running the business that allows the company to meet its responsibilities towards our customers, our employees, the environment, our suppliers and local communities, as well as our Group shareholders.
To ensure that we meet our stakeholders' expectations, we ask them for feedback on the issues they would like us to address. We then set ourselves achievable targets for improvement and measure our performance through data collection.

We've also developed a programme of activities involving our employees and customers under the following themes:
- 'safe' - helping customers and communities to make safe and responsible use of our services
- 'green' - reducing the environmental impacts of all of our operations, activities and products
- 'caring' - caring about the community in which we work and operate
How does Orange measure its progress on corporate responsibility?
We use a number of indicators to measure our performance in key areas. The indicators are drawn from the social and environmental reporting requirements of the French New Economic Regulations Act, and the Global Reporting Initiative Telecoms Sector Supplement on corporate responsibility reporting. We publish our results in regular public reports, which since 2006 have been consolidated into the global France Telecom Responsible Growth report.

What is Orange doing to promote diversity in its workforce?
Orange is committed to ensuring that all employees receive a fair and equal experience of Orange regardless of gender, ability, race or ethnic origin, religious belief, age or sexual orientation, and that all employees feel engaged with Orange on an equal basis. Monitoring takes place to enable Orange to review the employee experience and respond appropriately.
A diversity champion has been appointed on the Orange UK board and a series of initiatives have been launched with expert groups to encourage greater diversity in the workforce.
These groups include:
- Race for Opportunity
A national network of businesses and organisations putting race issues on the business agenda. Orange takes part in an annual survey to help us see how we can foster an ethnically diverse workforce, and we work on improving the results from this year on year. - Employers Forum for Age
An independent network of employers who recognise the need to attract and retain valuable employees regardless of their age. - Employers Forum on Disability
The world's leading employers' organisation focused on disability as it affects business. - Opportunity Now
We've partnered with Opportunity Now to help make Orange a better place for women to work. Opportunity Now is a business-led campaign helping employers recognise the benefits that women contribute at work. - Working Families
The UK's leading work-life balance organisation, with whom we participate in benchmarking.
What is Orange doing to promote ethical behaviour?
As a wholly-owned subsidiary of France Telecom Group, Orange complies with relevant laws in France and the US, where France Telecom shares are listed, and also UK laws, where we operate.
Orange UK, with the rest of the France Telecom Group, regularly reviews accounting controls and undertakes full independent audits of these in line with strong corporate governance practice and relevant legislation.
We have in place a Group Code of Ethics setting out the behaviour we expect from our employees. This code draws on international principles, such as the OECD Convention on Countering Bribery and Corruption. To help employees understand what we expect from them and follow the code, we have rolled out local ethics guidance to all employees.

What is Orange doing about other environmental impacts?
Providing products and services to our customers means we use paper for marketing, billing and office use, as well as product packaging, electronic and network equipment, batteries, chargers and mobile phones.
We're trying to reduce the amount of resources we use by optimising reuse and recycling, and safely disposing of our waste wherever we can.

What is Orange doing about the visual impact of phone masts?
The design, position and quantity of our phone masts depend on factors such as the local landscape, the number of people living in an area and the demand for our services. We try and give the best service to our customers with the least possible impact on the environment.
We're sensitive to concerns about the impact of our network on rural and urban environments, and recognise the need to balance demands for efficient coverage with these concerns and our environmental responsibilities.
We actively engage with local communities and regulatory authorities both informally and as part of the formal planning process. Wherever possible we share sites with other operators or use existing structures. Where appropriate, we sometimes use special designs for our phone masts, camouflaging them to appear as lamp-posts or trees.

What advice does Orange give on phones and driving?
While you might be allowed to use a hands-free kit when driving, it is safer to pull over before making or taking a call, or to put your answer phone on and call back when it's safe and legal to do so. There is no evidence to suggest that using a hands-free kit reduces the risk of an accident, so it's safer not to use your mobile phone at all when driving.

health concerns
Can living near a phone mast affect my health?
