climate change

We share public concern about climate change. In 2004, 2005 & 2006, 80% of the electricity we used in our offices and call centres came from non-fossil fuel energy sources.

To reduce the amount of energy we use, the Carbon Trust helped us examine where we could be more efficient. In 2005 we gained Carbon Trust Energy Efficiency Accreditation for sound energy management in our offices and call centres.

A significant portion of the energy we need is to power the transmitters, switching centres and cooling systems of our mobile network. We have invested in the development of dispersed electricity generation from renewable and low impact sources. In Elan, Wales, we have installed a wind- and solar-powered transmitter mast. We know that our network accounts for approximately 70% of our total energy use and we are working to ensure that in 2008, 90% of grid supplied electricity comes from non-fossil fuel sources.

did you know?

There are lots of solar-powered accessories for mobile phones on the market. You'd save 1 kg of CO2 in 12 weeks if you used a solar-powered charger for your mobile.
