2009 has been an incredible year for concept cars, with an avalanche of futuristic concepts crossing our path since the beginning of the year.

But while some of these innovative design studies have managed to become popular in the eyes of the motoring media, that's no guarantee that their manufacturers will give them the green light for production.

While some concepts have got the go-ahead because of a positive response from the media and public alike – just look at the GtbyCitroen as a prime example – there are others, such as the Volkswagen Bluesport concept, that are yet to be confirmed for production.

Taking this into consideration, we've put together a list of the best concepts we've seen this year – some a little crazy, others that wouldn't look out of place on today's roads – which we think should one day become a reality.
